Stripe Reporting: What SaaS Businesses Actually Get

Written by Lea LeBlanc | August 06, 2021

Founders working off of Stripe alone usually start asking questions their dashboard can't answer:

  • You can see revenue coming in, but you can't see why MRR moved. Was it new customers, upgrades, downgrades, or churn?
  • You can't answer basic investor questions like churn rate by plan or cohort retention without exporting data and building a spreadsheet
  • You discover too late that a customer churned or a high-value account went quiet, because nothing in Stripe surfaces it
  • You know you're losing revenue to failed payments, but you just don't know how much

As one operations and finance lead described it on a sales call, Stripe's native dashboards fell short for their team: retention metrics like NRR and NDR were hard to track, and the numbers didn't always reconcile against their own books.

Tired of exporting Stripe CSVs to answer basic questions? Connect Stripe to Baremetrics and get every SaaS metric pre-built in about 30 minutes — no SQL required.

Stripe's reporting layers at a glance

Layer What it is Cost Skill needed
Stripe Dashboard Payment-operations reporting, top-line MRR Free None
Stripe Sigma SQL access to every Stripe data object From $10/mo, scaling with charge volume SQL
Stripe Data Pipeline Raw sync to Snowflake, Redshift, or Databricks Subscription (bundles Sigma free) Data team
Baremetrics Pre-built SaaS metrics, recovery, and forecasting on top of Stripe From $49/mo None

What Stripe's default dashboard includes

Stripe's built-in reporting is more capable than most comparison posts admit. Out of the box you get:

  • Revenue overview: gross revenue, net revenue, refunds, disputes
  • Payment volume and trends: charted by day, week, or month
  • Subscription overview: active subscriptions, trial counts, basic cancellations
  • MRR: auto-calculated if you use Stripe Billing with correctly configured subscription objects (Stripe-native subscriptions only)
  • Customer list: transaction history, subscription status, payment methods
  • Payment success rate, payouts, and Radar fraud signals

If you only need payment-processing visibility, this is fine. And genuinely free.

What Stripe does not calculate natively

Here's where the wall is. Stripe's default dashboard does not give you:

  • MRR movements: no breakdown of New, Expansion, Contraction, Churned, or Reactivation MRR
  • Revenue churn vs. customer churn rates
  • Customer Lifetime Value (LTV): must be built via SQL or a third-party tool
  • Cohort retention tables
  • ARPU trends
  • At-risk revenue (cards expiring soon)
  • Segmentation by plan, country, billing cadence, or custom attribute
  • Multi-source normalization: Stripe + Apple + Google Play into one MRR number

One nuance on accuracy. Stripe's MRR figure is often reported as 75–85% accurate versus actual recurring revenue, due to timezone normalization gaps, proration edge cases, and trial-conversion handling. Dedicated analytics tools re-process this data for higher accuracy.

Stripe Sigma: what it adds and what it costs

Stripe Sigma is Stripe's SQL environment. It gives direct query access to every Stripe data object (subscriptions, invoices, customers, charges, payouts), with pre-built query templates, an AI assistant that writes SQL from plain English, scheduled queries, and basic charts.

Sigma pricing: charge-volume based — $10/mo (annual) or $15/mo (monthly) up to 250 charges, $60/mo up to 2,500 charges, $225/mo up to 10,000, $450/mo up to 25,000, with overage above each tier. It's free in sandbox, during a 30-day trial, and with a Stripe Data Pipeline subscription.

Sigma's real limits:

  • It requires SQL proficiency. Non-technical founders are blocked without an analyst.
  • It's Stripe-data only. No Apple, Google Play, Braintree, or Recurly — no multi-source view.
  • No pre-built SaaS KPI dashboards. You build what you get.
  • No dunning, cancellation flows, or financial forecasting. It's a reporting layer, not a growth tool.
  • Stripe-locked. Switch billing providers and your queries are useless.

One question, three ways to answer it

Take "what's our churn by plan?" On the Stripe dashboard, you can't. The data exists, but nothing computes churn by segment. With Sigma, you can: write the SQL (or prompt the AI assistant), validate the join logic against subscription objects, schedule the query, then repeat for every variant of the question. Budget an analyst afternoon. In Baremetrics, it's two clicks. Pick the churn metric, segment by plan. The same goes for cohort retention, LTV by plan, and expansion MRR.

That's the practical difference. Sigma gives you infinite questions at analyst cost. A metrics layer gives you the standard questions instantly.

When Stripe reporting stops being enough

In our experience, most SaaS companies outgrow Stripe's native analytics around $20–30K MRR. That's when cohort analysis, segmentation, LTV by plan, and forecasting stop being nice-to-haves. The triggers we hear on calls: a new hire asks about churn, an investor asks for cohort retention, or a formula in the metrics spreadsheet finally breaks.

"I don't really have time to learn SQL. I just want a dashboard that tells me what's happening." — that's the moment.

Getting full SaaS metrics from your Stripe data with Baremetrics

MRR Waterfall in Baremetrics

Baremetrics is the business-intelligence layer on top of Stripe. Connect your Stripe account (a one-click OAuth, about 30 minutes to full setup) and you get, pre-built:

Every metric Stripe leaves out. Full MRR waterfall (New / Expansion / Reactivation / Contraction / Churn by day), revenue and user churn, LTV, ARPU, cohort retention tables, at-risk revenue from expiring cards, and a live event stream of every subscription event — no SQL, no exports.

Net Revenue Retention in Baremetrics

Segmentation Stripe can't do. Unlimited segments by plan, country, billing cadence, or any custom attribute — with saved dashboards per segment. Answer "what's our churn by plan?" in two clicks instead of a new spreadsheet.

Recovery for the failed payments Stripe only retries. Stripe Smart Retries handles charge timing (keep it on — it's good). Baremetrics Recover adds what Stripe's limited, Stripe-branded failed-payment emails can't: up to 7 fully customizable emails, a branded billing widget, in-app banner, paywall, and SMS. In May 2026 alone, active Recover accounts recovered $1.24M in failed charges, with an average 14.9% recovery rate.

Forecasting Stripe doesn't attempt. Forecast Plus connects QuickBooks or Xero to model runway, burn rate, CAC, and P&L scenarios alongside your SaaS metrics.

Pricing starts at $49/month (Launch, annual billing), with a 60-day money-back guarantee.

When to stay on Stripe reporting

To be fair to Stripe: the default dashboard is free, and Stripe is the source of truth for your raw payment data. Stripe Data Pipeline syncs to Snowflake, Redshift, and Databricks — something Baremetrics doesn't offer yet. If you're pre-revenue or purely need payment visibility, stay on Stripe's dashboard. Revisit later.
