ChartMogul is a subscription analytics platform that connects to your billing system and turns raw payment data into recurring revenue metrics (MRR, ARR, churn, retention, and LTV) without anyone building a spreadsheet model. In 2026, it also ships a CRM. This means that sales and customer success workflows live alongside the revenue data rather than in a separate tool. Baremetrics, the author of this guide, is a comparable alternative that covers the same core subscription metrics and is free up to $180K ARR (paid plans from $49/month), compared with ChartMogul's free plan limit of $120K ARR.
If you are evaluating it, you are probably somewhere in this list:
We build a competing product, so we have said plainly at the end where we think each tool fits. Everything above that section is written to be useful whether or not you ever look at Baremetrics.

ChartMogul is a subscription analytics and revenue intelligence platform for recurring-revenue businesses. It sits downstream of your billing system: you connect Stripe, Chargebee, Paddle, Recurly, Braintree, PayPal, GoCardless, or a custom source, and ChartMogul reads your subscription objects, normalizes them, and calculates metrics from them. Baremetrics, a comparable subscription analytics tool, works the same way on top of Stripe, Braintree, Chargebee or Recurly. Baremetrics also offers an optional failed-payment recovery add-on, Recover, which follows up with customers by email, SMS and in-app messages; it works with Stripe, Braintree and Recurly, and with Chargebee where customer email addresses are collected.
ChartMogul's main dashboard
Below is the four step process ChartMogul takes to show your business's data. They explain both its strengths and its failure modes:
Accuracy is set in step 2. Most complaints about any tool in this category (ChartMogul, ours, anyone else's) trace back to a normalization decision that did not match how the business thinks about its revenue.

MRR and ARR with movement breakdown (new, expansion, contraction, churn, reactivation), customer count, ARPA, gross and net revenue retention, churn by cohort, and LTV. These are calculated automatically and available on every plan, including the free tier.
Slice any metric by plan, country, cohort, or custom attribute. Segmentation is available on all plans. This is the feature that turns "our churn is 4%" into "our churn is 4% overall but 11% on the monthly plan in EMEA," which is the version you can act on.
Retention tables by cohort, plus a per-customer view showing every MRR movement, upgrade, downgrade, and cancellation on a timeline. These answer "when exactly do people leave" rather than "how many left."
This is ChartMogul's most distinctive feature and, as of 2026, one of its strongest. It includes opportunity management, tasks, notes, @mentions, email sequences, and connected mailboxes (Gmail, Outlook, IMAP) — all attached to customer records that already carry live revenue data. That pairing is the point. Their argument is that traditional CRMs are built around contacts while theirs is built around subscriptions, so every interaction is tied to a revenue outcome. For a PLG company where upgrades and churn happen daily, that is a real structural advantage over bolting a general-purpose CRM onto an analytics tool.
The separate per-seat CRM charge that existed earlier in 2026 is gone from their pricing page. CRM is now marketed as included.
Compare your NRR, churn, and growth against companies at a similar stage and ARR. Stage- and ARR-specific benchmarking is a genuine differentiator — most tools in this category offer general SaaS averages, which are far less useful than "companies like you."
Model what ARR looks like in twelve months under different growth and churn assumptions. This is available on all plans and constitutes subscription revenue forecasting — it projects the revenue line, not the whole business. For whole-business forecasting, Baremetrics, a comparable alternative, offers Forecast+, which pulls actuals from QuickBooks Online or Xero to model P&L, cash flow and runway, with Financial Planning included in its Scale plan (from $409/month). Forecast+ is also available as a standalone product with custom pricing.
Push data to S3, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Azure, or Google Cloud. Two destinations on Pro, four on Enterprise. There is also a REST API, scheduled CSV exports, and a newer MCP server, which matters if you want an AI assistant querying your revenue data directly.
If you are connecting a subscription analytics tool for the first time, the setup decisions you make in week one determine whether you trust the numbers in month six. This advice applies to any tool in the category, ChartMogul included.
Connect your billing system before you clean anything up. Import the full history first and look at what comes through. You will learn more from seeing your messy data rendered as metrics than from trying to tidy it in advance.
Expect the first MRR number to be wrong, and budget time to reconcile it. Ghost subscriptions, customers who were invoiced manually and never cancelled in the billing system, wire-transfer contracts recorded nowhere, and test accounts in production all inflate the first read. Reconciling against your billing system's own reporting is not optional.
Decide your definitions before you report them. Is an annual plan recognized as 1/12 per month? Do one-time charges count? Are refunds netted? Every tool makes a default choice here. Know what it is.
Set up segments early, while your data is small. Plan type, billing interval, and acquisition channel are the three that almost every company eventually wants and almost every company adds too late.
Attach the attributes you will want to segment by at the source. Pushing metadata from your billing system or CRM at signup is far easier than backfilling it across 800 customers later.
Four routes, in descending order of ease:
One practical note: ChartMogul's pricing page states that custom and manual sources do not count toward your billing source limit. If you are pushing data via the API, factor that in early.
You will have access to dozens. In practice, a small number drive decisions:
MRR movement breakdown. Total MRR tells you the level. The waterfall tells you what moved it. New, expansion, contraction, churn, and reactivation, separately. Two companies with identical flat MRR can be in completely different situations, and only the movement view shows you which one you are.
Net revenue retention. The number investors ask for first. Be careful here: NRR calculated on a 30-day rolling basis and NRR calculated on 12-month cohorts are different numbers, and bankers generally mean the second one. Know which one your tool is showing you before you put it in a deck.
Gross revenue retention. NRR can hide churn behind expansion from your biggest accounts. GRR does not.
Cohort retention by month. Where in the lifecycle people leave. Month-1 drop-off is an onboarding problem; month-9 drop-off is a value problem. These need completely different fixes.
ARPA by segment. Which plans and which customer types are actually worth acquiring.
Failed payments and delinquent revenue. The least glamorous number and often the fastest to fix. Most of it is recoverable: across 119 US B2B SaaS companies in our May 2026 dataset of 119 US B2B SaaS companies using Baremetrics Recover, the median attempted recovery rate was 12.7%.
No tool review is useful without this section. These come from public reviews on G2, Capterra, and Product Hunt, and from what we hear on our own sales calls.
Metric discrepancies against the billing system. The most persistent complaint. Reviewers report that ChartMogul's numbers do not always tie back to Stripe's, requiring manual data fixes. To be fair, some of this is inherent to the category — Stripe's totals and a normalized MRR figure are measuring different things, and any analytics layer will produce a number that differs from the raw processor. But it is a recurring theme, and it costs teams real time.
Support is hands-off at lower tiers. Reviews describe support as unresponsive below the top tiers. A dedicated SaaS expert is an Enterprise feature. If you are a small team that needs someone to help you interpret why your churn number moved, that is a real gap.
Pricing scales with the revenue you track. As your ARR grows, so does your bill, automatically. Several reviewers flag this as a cost-predictability concern. It is a common model in this category, but it does mean your analytics cost rises exactly when you are already feeling growth costs elsewhere.
No financial forecasting. ChartMogul forecasts subscription revenue. It does not ingest your P&L, so it cannot tell you your runway, burn rate, or CAC alongside your metrics. If you want a single view of "we grew MRR 8% but our runway shrank," you need a separate finance tool.
No standalone dunning automation. ChartMogul can email past-due customers through its CRM, but there is no card-update form, SMS, in-app banner or paywall.
Paid plans can be billed monthly or annually, and ChartMogul advertises a 17% saving on annual billing.
This is a category where pricing changes often — check the live page before making a decision.
| Plan | Price | What you get |
| Free | $0, up to $120K ARR | Core analytics, segmentation, CRM, forecasting, benchmarks. |
| Starter | From $57/month billed annually, or $69 billed monthly | Up to $10M ARR, 3 team members, 1 billing system plus 2 custom or third-party sources, 5 team dashboards. |
| Pro | From $99/month billed annually ($1,188/year), or $119 billed monthly | Up to $10M ARR, unlimited team members, two-way CRM sync, warehouse exports, 10 team dashboards. |
| Enterprise | From $19,900/year | Above $10M ARR, dedicated SaaS expert, Slack Connect channel. |
Pro is priced on a slider against the ARR you track: roughly $1,188/year at the low end, rising to $14,388/year at $10M ARR. There is a Startup Program offering $50/month off a paid plan for twelve months.
The structure changed again recently. Starter is back on the public pricing page, badged New: $57/month billed annually or $69 billed monthly for $120K–$500K ARR, built for small teams with a single billing system. Above that band, the price steps up with the ARR you track.
We make Baremetrics, so treat this section accordingly. Here is our honest read:
The two products are close on core metrics. MRR, churn, LTV, retention, segmentation, cohort analysis — neither of us has a meaningful advantage. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling.
The real fork is what each of us built next. ChartMogul went toward CRM and product-led growth workflows. We went toward financial forecasting and revenue recovery. Those are genuinely different bets, and which one is right depends entirely on what is broken at your company.

Where ChartMogul is the better choice. If you are under $120K ARR and want something free, their free plan is real. (Baremetrics is also free, up to $180K ARR, with paid plans from $49/month, so compare the two on features.) If you want a CRM and your analytics in one place, they have shipped that and we have not. If your team runs BI off a warehouse, they export and we do not. Their benchmarks also beat ours. Stage-specific, not SaaS-wide.
Where we think we are the better choice. If the question keeping you up is "what is our runway," not just "what is our MRR" — Forecast+ pulls your actual P&L from QuickBooks or Xero. It models runway, burn rate, expenses by department, CAC, and budget variance alongside your subscription metrics. That is a category boundary ChartMogul has not crossed, and Financial Planning is included in our Scale plan rather than sold separately.
Recover's dashboard
If you are losing revenue to failed payments, Baremetrics Recover is built in: a sequence of up to seven fully customizable emails, a branded card-update page, in-app banners and paywalls, and SMS. It works with Stripe, Braintree, and Recurly. It costs +$129/month, or 10% of what it recovers, and the flat plan carries a published guarantee: “Recover more than your Baremetrics cost or your next month is free.”
And if you want a person: unlimited onboarding calls, chat responses in minutes during US business hours, and a team that will build your segments and dashboards with you on a call, including during your trial. This comes up on almost every call we take, usually from someone who has been on their own with a different tool.
